I’ve covered a lot of different topics about cavaliers, and today is no exception. This time I’ll answer and dive deep into the commonly asked question, do cavalier king charles spaniels shed a lot?

As I’m writing this blog post in April, spring has just arrived here in the north and we can finally enjoy daily sunshine that melts the snow away.

But do you know what also tells me it’s springtime? There is dog hair on my clothes, on the bedding, on the velvet chairs, and on all other textiles. Balls of dog hair accumulate quickly behind doors and in corners of the room. That happens because springtime equals shedding season.

But that is life with a long-haired dog! I have gotten used to it, and with some extra steps, cavalier shedding is not a problem at all. Sometimes I just like to complain about stuff.

Read this article to learn the inside scoop on what to expect and how to keep the cavalier king charles spaniel shedding manageable!

The Basics of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Shedding

Shedding is an important topic for future and current cavalier king charles spaniel owners because it can affect the cleanliness and overall appearance of their home.

This breed is known to shed less than some other breeds, there is still a certain amount of fur that will be shed throughout the year, like I mentioned in the intro.

Do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Have a Double Coat?

The Cavalier king charles spaniel is a single-coated breed. They have a smooth, long, and silky coat that is typically soft to the touch. Single-coated means that there is no undercoat, which again means that the fur is less dense and less likely to shed as heavily as double-coated fur.

However, cavaliers tend to shed more seasonally like double-coated breeds. That’s why some people describe cavalier’s coat as a combination or a hybrid.

The hybrid coat is not a real term, but that is an understandable way to describe them since the cavalier king charles spaniel coat type is single-coated but the shedding pattern is similar to double-coated.

How Much Do Cavaliers Shed?

The Cavalier type of coat does not have an undercoat, which means that the fur is less dense and less likely to shed as heavily as double-coated fur.

Cavalier king charles spaniels shed lightly throughout the year. You notice this when you have held cavalier on your lap for some time and it’s time to put them on the ground: your clothes guaranteed will have dog hair on them.

But it’s the seasonal shedding that you should know about! Cavaliers experience increased shedding in the spring and fall when the days are getting longer or shorter.

Understanding the Seasons of Shedding

Shedding in cavalier king charles spaniels is influenced by various factors, one being hormonal changes and daylight hours, which trigger the growth and shedding cycles of their hair follicles.

Cavalier king charles spaniels shed more heavily twice a year because it’s a natural process for them to prepare for changing seasons:

  • In the spring, as the weather warms up, cavaliers shed their thicker coats to help them stay cooler in the upcoming summer months.
  • In the fall, as temperatures begin to drop, cavaliers shed their summer coats to make room for a thicker undercoat that will help keep them warm during the colder winter months.

While this heavy shedding can be a nuisance for owners (or is it just me?), it is a natural and important part of a dog’s seasonal adaptation.

Factors That Affect Cavalier Shedding

Understanding the shedding patterns of cavalier king charles spaniels can help owners prepare for the necessary cleaning and grooming tasks, and ensure that their dog is healthy and happy.

Additionally, excessive shedding can be a sign of underlying health issues or poor grooming habits.

Dog’s Age as a Factor

The age of a dog can affect shedding in particular ways. Puppies, for example, will often shed their puppy coat as they grow and develop their adult coat.

As dogs reach their senior years, they may experience changes in their coat, such as thinning or a dull appearance, which can be related to hormonal changes and aging. This happened to two of my previous cavaliers, plus their coat got a little bit curlier.

Diet and Nutrition Have an Impact on Shedding

The diet and nutrition of a cavalier king charles spaniel can have a significant impact on their shedding. A healthy and balanced diet that includes all the necessary vitamins and minerals can help promote healthy skin and coat, which in turn can reduce shedding:

  • Protein: a key component and a macronutrient of a dog’s diet that helps to build and repair skin and coat tissues.
  • Omega-3 & Omega-6 fatty acids: essential fatty acids that help to reduce inflammation and keep the skin and coat healthy and shiny.
  • Vitamin A: important for maintaining healthy skin and coat, as well as vision and immune system function.
  • Vitamin E: an antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from damage and supports healthy skin and coat.
  • Vitamin B: Also known as biotin, is essential for healthy skin, coat, and nail growth.
  • Zinc: this mineral is important for healthy skin and coat, as well as immune system function.
  • Iron: a mineral that is important for the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the skin and other tissues.

A poor diet that lacks essential nutrients can result in a dull, dry coat that is more prone to shedding.

It’s important to provide your dog with high-quality food that meets their nutritional needs and to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to obesity.

If you have concerns about your dog’s diet and shedding, you should consult with a veterinarian or a professional pet nutritionist.

Health Issues Can Cause Shedding

Cavaliers’ health issues can have a significant impact on their shedding. Some health conditions can cause excessive shedding, while others can cause hair loss or thinning of the coat.

Skin allergies, hormonal imbalances, and some parasites such as fleas can contribute to excessive shedding. Fleas, in particular, can cause a dog to scratch and bite at their skin, leading to hair loss and skin irritation.

Certain medications used to treat heart disease, such as diuretics, can cause dry skin and coat, which can increase shedding.

Other conditions, such as thyroid disorders or Cushing’s disease, can cause changes in the dog’s coat, such as thinning or a dull appearance.

If your dog’s shedding seems excessive or if you notice any changes in their coat, you should consult with a veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues. Proper treatment of any health issues can help to minimize shedding and promote a healthy coat.

Effects of Stress and Anxiety on Cavalier Shedding

When a dog is stressed or anxious, their body can release a hormone called cortisol, which can affect the growth cycle of their hair follicles. This can cause cavaliers to shed more than usual, and may even lead to bald patches or thinning of the coat.

Stress and anxiety can be caused by a variety of factors, such as changes in the dog’s environment, separation anxiety, or fear of loud noises like thunder or fireworks.

Dogs may lick or bite at their skin when they are stressed or anxious, which can further irritate the skin and lead to hair loss and shedding.

Managing Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Shedding

Now that I’ve scared all of you with my talk about shedding and fur balls everywhere, let’s look at how to actually manage the shedding so there won’t be dog hair everywhere!

Regular Grooming

By incorporating regular grooming into your routine, you can help manage shedding and keep your cavalier king charles spaniel looking and feeling their best.

Regular grooming can help manage the shedding of dog hair in following ways:

1. Brushing your dog’s coat regularly can help remove loose and dead fur, which reduces the amount of hair that falls out around the house. The fur balls floating around the house remind me to brush my dogs more and not to be lazy.

This can also help distribute natural oils throughout the coat, keeping it healthy and shiny.

2. Bathing your dog can help remove any loose fur and dirt that may be trapped in the coat, reducing shedding and keeping your dog’s coat looking and feeling clean.

I usually bathe my cavalier once a month, but I’ve noticed bathing more frequently during shedding seasons helps get rid of the excess hair quicker.

Something that doesn’t come to mind easily is to keep your dog’s nails trimmed and their ears clean to help prevent excessive scratching and shaking, which can contribute to shedding.

Considerations for Cavalier Owners

If you have a cavalier and are annoyed/worried/struggling with the shedding, I’ve gathered some options to consider in order to ease your situation.

Professional Groomer Is an Option

If you have the budget, taking your dog to a professional groomer can help the workload if your cavalier king charles spaniel is shedding because groomers have the tools and experience to effectively manage shedding and keep your dog’s coat healthy and shiny.

Groomers provide services such as bathing, brushing, and trimming, which can help remove loose and dead fur, reduce shedding, and prevent matting and tangles.

Groomers can help identify any underlying health issues or skin problems that may be contributing to excessive shedding, and provide recommendations for how to address them.

Allergies: How to Manage Them

Cavalier king charles spaniel is not a hypoallergenic breed. While this breed is known to shed less than some other breeds, it is still possible for someone with a dog allergy to experience symptoms.

To minimize the impact of dog shedding on allergies:

  1. investing in an air purifier with a *HEPA filter
  2. regular grooming
  3. limiting access to certain areas of the home (e.g. bedroom)
  4. considering allergy medication

*A HEPA filter is a type of air filter that is designed to capture a high percentage of very small particles from the air, including pollen, pet dander, and dust mites.

It’s important for someone with a dog allergy to carefully consider whether getting a cavalier king charles spaniel is the right choice for them, as allergies can be difficult to manage even with these precautions.

When to Consult a Veterinarian

Consult a veterinarian if you notice any changes in your cavalier’s shedding patterns, such as excessive shedding or bald patches.

These changes may indicate underlying health issues that require medical attention. If you notice any signs of discomfort or irritation in your dog, such as scratching or biting at their skin, it is important to seek veterinary care to prevent any further complications.

In general, it is always a good idea to consult a veterinarian if you have any concerns about your dog’s health or well-being.

Conclusion

Cavalier king charles spaniels are delightful and loving companions that make excellent pets for those who are willing to put in the time and effort required to properly care for them.

Shedding is an unavoidable aspect of owning a cavalier, but with proper grooming and regular maintenance, you can minimize shedding and keep your home clean and tidy.

Remember to always consult with your veterinarian or a professional groomer for advice on the best practices for your cavalier’s specific needs. By following these tips, you can enjoy a happy and healthy life with your best friend!
