Must-Have Tools and Supplies

Create a Personalized High-Quality Grooming Kit For Your Dog With This Checklist!

Having the right grooming tools is key to making this process efficient and enjoyable—for both you and your dog.

High-quality tools not only save time but also ensure a more pleasant experience, helping your cavalier stay relaxed during each grooming session.

Unlike some breeds, cavaliers have a single-layer coat, which is softer and less prone to shedding compared to double-coated breeds. This unique feature means they require gentle but effective grooming tools to maintain their coat’s natural shine and prevent tangles.

Bath Time Must-Haves

✨Everything starts with good cleansing bath and deep-conditioning conditioner. Cavaliers should be bathed every 4–6 weeks to maintain a clean, healthy coat. The floppy ears collect grime and grease more than any other part of their body so use deep cleansing shampoo for those.

Recommendations:

Their soft and silky coat requires high-quality moisturizing conditioner. Leave-in sprays and masks are huge bonus!

Brushing Essentials

Regular brushing not only keeps their coat smooth and shiny by distributing natural oils but also reduces shedding, improves skin circulation, and prevents mats.

Focus on areas prone to tangling, such as behind the ears, armpits, and under the legs. Using tools like a pin brush and slicker brush makes the process effective while strengthening your bond with your dog.

Recommendations:

Don’t bother witht the grooming gloves. They are clumsy and gimmicky and don’t work well for cavaliers.

Tools for Trimming

Maintaining your cavalier’s paws is essential for their comfort, hygiene, and appearance. Trim the fur around their paw pads with scissors or clippers to prevent dirt buildup and slipping.

Recommendations:

5” scissors and shears are just perfect for cavaliers.

Nail Care Tools

Check and trim their nails every week, using proper tools like nail clippers or grinders, and handle the process gently to keep your dog comfortable and active. I don’t have personal experience with nail grinders so I don’t know what to recommend.

Recommendations:

Eye and Ear Cleaning Supplies

Check their ears weekly for redness or odor, and use a dog-safe cleaning solution with cotton pads to gently clean the area. Eye rinse is for situations when your cav gets something in their eye like sand or small particles, and it needs to get rinsed out.

Recommendations:

No q-tips!!!! Don’t stick anything in your dog’s ear!

Teeth Cleaning

Brushing their teeth several times a week with dog-safe toothpaste and dental chews or toys can help keep their teeth clean and healthy.
